What are different user types on the eTownz Dashboard?
General User: This user can
- Register for just one community
- Can submit new logs (draft)
- Add comments / contributions (draft)
- Follow particular projects / logs
- Become admin of local organisation and update its profile
- Will receive notifications relevant to their interests
Town Teams: This user profile type caters for the team who are organising the community plan locally. The can
- Do all the things a general user can do plus
- Review & publish new draft logs
- Review & publish new draft comments & contributions
Regional Manager: This profile is similar to Town Team profile but the user can review/update multiple communities where a Town Team profile can only update one community
What are “Community Profile Logs”?
We need to take stock of the key attributes and needs of our community and we do this by creating a register of “Community Profile Logs”. These can be assets or amenities of the community such as “Bottle Bank“, “Peace Commissioner” or “ATM” or they can be a project or a challenge such as “Community Hall Renovation” or “Flood Risk on low road.”
It’s important to note that a log entry must always be assigned the following,
- Log Type
- Assets (Have / Need)
- Projects (Currant / Planned / Ideas for the Future)
- Goals / Challenges
- Pillar and Themes
- Pillars (4): Environment / Economy / Wellbeing / Management
- Themes (16): These themes go under the pillars and are more specific. For a full list, see below in the Pillars and Themes Section.
These logs are part of the community plan and help to add structure to it.
All users can add new logs. They are reviewed by eTownz and the local town team before going live to the dashboard or plan.
What are Log Types?
Logs are assigned to a number of categories that enable better organisation of the assets in the town report. When submitting a new log, the relevant log types should be assigned to the submission.
Existing log types include:
Asset – Have:
This is for assets that are already present in the community. Assets might include rivers, car-parks, playgrounds etc.
Asset – Need:
These are suggested assets which would benefit the community.
Stakeholder – Group/Club:
This type represents all the various clubs and groups in the area including hobby groups, sports groups and various interest groups
Stakeholder – Public Service:
This represents local council, health services, policing and fire warden and all other non-private organisations and services.
Stakeholder – Business:
These are all the local businesses and self employed people in the area
Project – Past / Present:
These are projects which are either ongoing or completed. A project could be the renovation of a facility or the preparation for this years Tidy Towns.
Project – Planned:
This is for projects which have been decided on but haven’t happened yet.
Project – Idea:
Logs of this type are ideas which are up for discussion and need their details to be hammered out. Use this if you have an idea of a project you think could be beneficial to your community.
A challenge is a problem or status in your community which either has to be dealt with or worked around. It could be something which you can try to solve or lessen, such as unemployment or it could be something which can’t be changed but people should be aware of when planning projects, such as a protected bat roost which you have to be aware of when trimming hedges.
A Goal is a desirable end status that you want to achieve. A goal differs from a project in that it can be less specific and have no one immediate set of actions needed to achieve the goal. A goal could have several different projects working towards it. An example could be “More Community Involvement” or “Improved Infrastructure and roads.
What are the Community Development "Pillars" and "Themes"
Pillars form the basis for all asset logging within the community and enable us to build a robust community plan.
4 pillars have been set out in the areas of Environment, Well-being, Economy and Management. Within these pillars are 15 themes. Themes can be thought of as sub-pillars which organise the contents of that pillar into categories.
In order to build the community plan, it is important to assign logs to their relevant community development themes.
The 4 Pillars and their 15 subcategories called “Themes” which are illustrated in the table below.

This pillar relates to the local environment, sustainable use of resources locally and local habitats
Habitats & Environment

This pillar relates to the economy and local business and local employment opportunities
This pillar covers the effective planning and management of local activities and projects
Infrastructure & Transport
Participation / Volunteering
What are "Comments & Contributions"
The “Comments and Contributions” are a simple way for any user to comment on the log and promote conversations. A user can vote for the log or follow the log so they see future updates regarding this log.
Contributions appear on the live dashboard after they are reviewed by eTownz or a member of the town team.
What is the "Organisation Profile"
Organisation profiles are a way for the local stakeholders to get involved in the community plan.
Local organisations are:
- Clubs / groups or non profit organisations
- Public service providers
These organisations are essential components of a community plan and their activities and goals are included in the overall community plan. They are invited to create a profile on the dashboard. Once an organisation is created in the system additional administrators can be invited (e.g. other members of a club committee ) to help update and maintain the organisations profile periodically.
Organisations are encouraged to add details of their
- Projects (Past, Present and future project ideas)
This information is included in the community plan making the plan inclusive to all local organisation.
